The Department of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department came into being in 1991 after being bifurcated from the erstwhile Forest, Fisheries & Animal Husbandry Department vide the G.A. Department Resolution No.28038/Gen. Dt.10.10.1990.
- The Department is a nodal Department for formulating plans, policies and programmes for Fishery as well as Animal Resource Sector and is responsible for its successful implementation.
- The Department aims at utilising sustainably the fishery potential of the State and increasing milk, egg and meat production through various means in addition to providing Veterinary Services to a large number of Animal populations.
The Department aims to achieve its objective through following measures: -
- Enlarging Inland Water Resource for Pisciculture.
- Maximising Utilisation of Brackish Water Resources in an eco-friendly manner.
- Harnessing Marine Resources sustainably.
- Adapting Modern Technology of Pisciculture.
- Improving Professionalism through training/ counselling.
- Forming Cooperative’s for community participation and expanding market potential.
- Encouraging private sector to adopt scientific farming applying latest technology.
- Improving potential of local breeds.
- Dissemination of new technology.
- Better management of animal nutrition and health.
- Increase productivity through genetic up-gradation.
- Expansion of livestock sector activities.
- Strengthening of Orissa Biological Product Institute for Production of lifesaving biological vaccine and medicines.
- Strengthening preventive disease control mechanism.
- Increasing self-employment under both Fishery and Animal Resources Development Sectors.
