AT the end of 2003-04, the Department has developed 905 nos. Departmental tanks through Food for Work (FFW) programme comprising an area of 123.29 ha. and has generated 6,84,047 man-days by utilizing 4547.65 M.T. of food grains. The work has also been undertaken in the Fish Seed Hatchery Projects of the OPDC Ltd – a Government of Orissa Undertaking.
The impact of the works undertaken by the Department under food for work can be well analysed from the developmental initiatives in the Chipilima Fish Hatchery Project of OPDC Ltd in the District of Sambalpur, where there were ample opportunities for the production of fish seed but for the non-renovation of the farm ponds and also with defective water supply system full utilisation of resources of the Hatchery could not be achieved that attributed to low income generation. After visualising the vast potentiality, different developmental works were taken up in the said hatchery through Food for Work programme from the year 2002-03 and the details of investments are as under:

After the provision of 29 ponds and renovation of another 03 ponds of the farm the need for development of the water supply system was thought of. Hence, a long pipeline was laid from the Power Channel, which is running alongside the farm. This innovative initiative rendered the farm free from the troubles of water supply once forever.
For the said intervention, the steady increase in the production of fish seed can be visualised from the following table:

It may be observed from the above statistics that after implementation of Food for Work programme in the said farm the production enhancement was nearly 50% in the first year itself. The production is further expected to reach an optimal position by doubling the present achievement in future years. Similarly it is presumed that the state fish seed production will also increase which will address the demand gap of fish seed in the State after promulgation of State Reservoir Fishery Policy.
